High-Speed Gate Operator and Access Control Upgrade in Atlanta, GA

By upgrading key components and refining system performance, this project delivered a more efficient and dependable gate and access control solution in Atlanta, GA

This project focused on rehabilitating existing gate infrastructure while upgrading key components to improve performance, speed, and overall reliability across the property..

The scope included restoring two 13-foot V-track gates and replacing outdated entry hardware with modern, high-performance operators and advanced vehicle detection systems. Rather than a full replacement, this project was designed to extend the life of existing assets while bringing the system up to current standards for a commercial access control system.

Work began with gate refurbishment to improve both appearance and durability. Each gate received a full black semi-gloss spray treatment, restoring its finish while adding protection against corrosion and long-term wear. This step not only improves aesthetics but also helps preserve the structural integrity of the gates over time.

The operator systems were then upgraded by replacing the existing DKS 9150 units with All-O-Matic SL-100DC Pro slide gate operators. These high-performance units are designed for smoother operation and increased efficiency, making them a strong fit for high-traffic environments. To meet the client’s request for faster operation, the pulley system was custom-calibrated and reversed, allowing the gates to achieve an opening and closing speed of 12 inches per second.

Barrier arms were also upgraded as part of the overall traffic flow improvement. Existing DKS 1601 barrier arms were replaced with All-O-Matic Magna-Q units, which were synchronized with the slide gates to ensure coordinated movement. This creates a more controlled and efficient entry and exit process, especially in properties with consistent vehicle traffic.

A major portion of the project focused on upgrading detection and safety systems to meet current UL 325 compliance standards. AES yellow disc e-Loops were installed, including one dedicated loop for free exit and two safety loops to prevent accidental gate closure—one for each gate. These systems provide reliable vehicle detection without the need for invasive installation methods.

Additional detection enhancements included the installation of Optex vehicle sensors, including virtual loops and presence sensors mounted on specialized mini-posts. These components provide precise triggering for gate closure while improving overall system responsiveness.

To meet modern safety requirements, EMX IRB-MON2 monitored photo-eye sensors were installed with protective hoods. These sensors ensure the gate system can detect obstructions and respond immediately, helping prevent accidents and maintaining compliance with current access control safety standards.

Existing infrastructure was also addressed where needed. Resident arming loops that had deteriorated due to failed caulking were removed and reinstalled, protecting exposed wiring from weather damage and restoring proper functionality.

As part of the access control transition, the outdated DKS 1835 call box and cellular hardware were decommissioned and replaced with a modern EMC system. This upgrade provides improved resident access control and supports remote management capabilities, aligning the system with current expectations for Atlanta access control systems.

In addition to improved functionality, this upgrade provides:

Faster gate operation with high-performance DC-powered operators

Improved traffic flow with synchronized gate and barrier arm movement

Reliable vehicle detection through advanced sensor technology

Full UL 325 compliance with modern safety systems

Enhanced durability through refurbishment and infrastructure improvements

This project is a strong example of how a targeted access control upgrade in Atlanta, GA can modernize existing gate systems without requiring a full replacement. By combining refurbishment, advanced hardware, and updated safety features, the result is a system that performs better, operates faster, and is built for long-term reliability.

Access Control and Gate System Overhaul in Atlanta, GA

Transforming outdated gate systems into a modern, high-performance access control solution for Atlanta properties

This project focused on upgrading both front and back gate systems with improved infrastructure, modern access control technology, and better traffic flow across the property.

This was a full-scale overhaul aimed at restoring reliability while bringing the entire system up to modern standards. Instead of patching isolated issues, the goal was to fix the root problems and build a clean, long-term solution that performs consistently in a high-traffic environment.

A big part of this project started with civil and structural improvements. Roughly 50% of the existing island was removed to open up traffic flow and allow for better positioning of the gate equipment. From there, new curbing and concrete were poured to match the existing look while reinforcing the structure. We also shaved down sections of curbing that were interfering with gate movement and fabricated custom brackets to allow the gates to open fully without restriction. These types of adjustments make a major difference in how smoothly a system operates day to day.

On the infrastructure side, we addressed several underlying electrical issues that were limiting performance. Damaged underground conduits were excavated and repaired or replaced, and previously cut wiring was identified and restored to bring full power back to both gate systems. To support the newer technology being installed, we added two NEMA-rated enclosures with active cooling to safely house network equipment. This ensures stable connectivity while protecting critical components from heat and weather.

With the foundation corrected, we moved into installing a modern access control system. Three LiftMaster CAPXM smart video intercoms were added, giving the property a much more advanced way to manage access. These systems allow for video-based entry control and remote management, as long as a stable internet connection is available. It’s a major step up from older call box systems and fits well with how properties are managing access today.

Both the front and back gate operators were also fully replaced with LiftMaster CSW24UL high-traffic commercial swing operators. These units are built for durability and consistent performance, especially in environments where the gates are being used throughout the day. Upgrading both systems at the same time helps ensure everything works together smoothly and reduces the chance of future breakdowns.

In addition to the overall upgrade, this project delivers:

Improved traffic flow and gate clearance

Reliable power and connectivity across both systems

Modern video-enabled access control for better security and convenience

Stronger, more durable gate operation with commercial-grade equipment

A clean, scalable setup that’s easier to maintain long-term

This project is a great example of what a complete access control and gate system overhaul should look like. By addressing structural, electrical, and technology components all at once, the result is a system that not only works better today but is built to last well into the future.

Pros: Highly aesthetic, "stately" feel; generally simpler motors.

Cons: Slower to open; requires a massive "arc" of clear space to swing into; high wind resistance (wind can strain or "sail" the motors).

Space Needs: You need a clear radius equal to the width of the gate leaf (usually 10'–12') behind the gate.

           Slide Gates (The Workhorse)

Average Cost: $18,000 – $35,000 (per pair).

Pros: Faster cycle time (better for high traffic); much better in windy areas; takes up zero "swing" space.

Cons: Requires a long, straight fence line to slide back into; tracks can get clogged with debris, snow, or ice (unless using a "Cantilever" system, which is more expensive).

Space Needs: You need a "storage" area along the fence line equal to the width of the gate plus about 30% for the counter-balance.

           2. City Requirements & "Stacking" Space

The biggest mistake an HOA can make is installing a gate too close to the public road.

           The Setback (Stacking) Rule

Most municipalities and Departments of Transportation (DOT) require a setback of 40' to 60' from the edge of the public road to the callbox.

Why? To prevent "stacking" traffic. If two cars are waiting to be buzzed in, the second car’s rear bumper cannot be hanging into the public street.

The Cost of Error: If the city deems your gate a traffic hazard, they can deny the permit or force a costly "tear-out and move" after installation.

           Fire Marshal & Emergency Access

By law, your gate cannot trap or block emergency vehicles.

Siren Sensors: ~$800 – $1,200. These automatically open the gate when they "hear" a high-decibel emergency siren (Yelp or Wail).

Knox Box / Key Switch: ~$500 – $900. A standardized box that allows Fire/Police to use a master key to override the system.

Strobe Sensors: Some cities require "Opticom" sensors that detect the flashing lights of an ambulance.

Trenching: Average $8.00 – $12.00 per foot. If you have to cut through existing asphalt or concrete, double this price.

Dedicated Power: Each gate motor needs a dedicated 20-amp circuit. If your nearest power source is 200 feet away, expect to pay $3,000+ just for the wire and conduit.

This section covers the legal and safety backbone of any automated gate project. In the industry, UL 325 isn't just a suggestion—it is the safety standard that dictates how a gate must behave to prevent injury or death.

Failure to adhere to these guidelines can lead to the HOA being held liable for accidents, and most professional installers will refuse to sign off on a system that isn't compliant.

Understanding UL 325 Compliance (2026 Standards)

UL 325 is the safety standard for gate operators. Its primary goal is entrapment protection—ensuring that if a person (especially a child) is in the path of a moving gate, the system detects them and reacts instantly.

           1. The "Two-Device" Requirement

For every "entrapment zone" (anywhere a person could be caught or crushed), the system must have at least two independent safety devices.

Inherent Sensor (Primary): Built into the motor; it detects a "spike" in resistance if the gate hits something and reverses the motor.

External Sensor (Secondary): Must be added by the installer. These include:

Photo Eyes (Non-Contact): Infrared beams that stop the gate if the beam is broken.

Sensing Edges (Contact): Pressure-sensitive "bumpers" on the edge of the gate that trigger an immediate stop upon contact.

           2. Monitoring Is Mandatory

Modern gate operators must monitor their safety devices. If a photo eye is blocked, damaged, or disconnected, the gate operator will "fail-safe" and refuse to move. You cannot simply bypass these sensors to keep a broken gate running; the system’s computer will lock it out.

           3. Audio Alarms

If the gate hits an obstruction twice in a row (two sequential activations), UL 325 requires a physical audio alarm to sound. The gate will then shut down completely and must be manually reset by someone who has a clear line of sight to the gate to ensure the area is safe.

Screening/Mesh: You cannot have gaps in a slide gate larger than 2.25 inches. This prevents children from reaching through the moving gate and getting their arms caught in the support rollers.

Speed Limit: Class I (Residential) and Class II (Commercial/HOA) slide gates are capped at a speed of 1 foot per second.

Roller Guards: All weight-bearing rollers must be covered to prevent fingers from being pulled into the pinch points.

Clearances: If the gate swings within 16 inches of a fixed object (like a wall or a brick column), that area is an entrapment zone and must be protected by a photo eye or a sensing edge.

Pedestrian Separation: By law, you cannot use a vehicular gate for pedestrian traffic. You must provide a separate, clearly marked pedestrian gate so people aren't tempted to walk through the "swing zone."

The Liability Warning: If your HOA board approves a gate that bypasses UL 325 (e.g., using "old-school" non-monitored sensors to save $1,000), your insurance provider may deny coverage in the event of an accident. Always insist on a UL 325 Certificate of Compliance from your contractor upon completion.

Choosing the Right Installer for Your Gate Project

Choosing an installer is the most critical "hidden" variable in your gate project. Because a 2-lane gate system is a mix of heavy-duty construction, high-voltage electrical, and sensitive software, you cannot hire a standard "fence guy." You need a specialized Automated Gate Integrator such as Power Access Control in Atlanta, GA serving the southeastern US.

           1. Verifying Insurance: Beyond the Piece of Paper

Don't just ask if they have insurance; ask for a Certificate of Insurance (COI) that names your HOA as an "Additionally Insured" party for the duration of the project.

General Liability: In 2026, the industry standard for HOA work is a minimum of $1,000,000 per occurrence.

Workers’ Compensation: This is non-negotiable. If an installer is injured on HOA property and the company doesn't have Workers' Comp, the HOA’s own insurance could be liable.

Professional Tip: Call the insurance agency listed on the COI to verify the policy is active.

           2. Years in Business & Specialization

The "tail" of a gate project is long. You need a company that will be around long-term.

The "Garage Door" Trap: Many garage door companies "also do gates." Ensure at least 75% of their work is automated gate systems.

Ask: "How many technicians are CAGOI certified?"

           3. High-Value Referrals

Ask for at least three HOA references with systems installed over two years ago.

The "Service Call" Test: Ask how quickly they respond to breakdowns.

Power Access Control completed a complete overhaul of an existing access control system, including removal of substandard wiring and non-functional legacy components. Installation and commissioning of new Brivo control hardware and power management modules to restore full system integrity and cloud connectivity. This access control installation in Cumming, GA reflects a modern upgrade designed to improve reliability, organization, and performance across commercial properties in the Atlanta access control market.

This project focused on replacing an unreliable and outdated system with a professional-grade commercial access control system built on the Brivo ACS6000 platform. At the core of the system is the B-ACS6000-MBE main board, serving as the primary controller and “brain” of the operation. This unit provides Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity while supporting multiple access points, making it ideal for scalable Atlanta access control systems.

To expand system capacity, two B-ACS6000-DB door expansion boards were installed by our team at Power Access Control, allowing support for up to six total readers within the cabinet. This provides flexibility for growing facilities that require additional access points without needing a complete system replacement—an important advantage for businesses in Cumming and throughout the Atlanta area.

Power management and distribution were also fully upgraded to ensure consistent and reliable operation by our team. Two B-ACS6000-PSB power supply boards were installed to provide regulated 12VDC power to all system components. In addition, two Altronix PDS8CB power distribution modules were integrated, utilizing self-resetting breakers instead of traditional fuses. This design allows the system to automatically recover from temporary faults without requiring service calls, improving uptime for critical access control systems.

The system is housed within a B-ACS6008-EXP expansion enclosure, providing a clean and organized installation environment. Two 7Ah 12VDC sealed lead acid batteries were installed to provide backup power during outages, ensuring the facility remains secure and operational even during power loss—an essential feature for modern commercial access control systems in Atlanta.

Significant improvements were made to the system’s wiring and overall organization. All field wiring was trimmed, labeled, and properly dressed to create a clean and professional layout. High-voltage AC and low-voltage DC lines were physically separated to reduce electromagnetic interference, improving system stability and performance.

Final system verification confirmed that all diagnostic LEDs on the control boards and power modules are operating under normal conditions. Communication across the system, including CAN bus connections between expansion boards, was tested and confirmed active by the team at Power Access Control—ensuring seamless performance across all connected devices.

Installation of a high-traffic slide gate operator and full system upgrade to improve reliability, safety, and long-term performance. This access control installation at Georgia State University’s Primate Center in Atlanta, GA included new operator hardware, advanced vehicle detection technology, and safety system integration to bring the site up to modern standards.

This project centered around our team upgrading the primary gate operator and supporting infrastructure for a high-traffic environment. A LiftMaster CSL24UL slide gate operator was installed, designed to handle gates up to 50 feet and 1,500 pounds. This heavy-duty commercial access control system features a soft start and stop motor to reduce mechanical stress, along with an integrated battery backup to ensure continuous operation during power outages—an essential feature for facilities requiring consistent access control in Atlanta.

To ensure a stable and long-lasting installation, the operator was mounted on a dedicated steel plate, providing a secure, vibration-free foundation. Proper mounting is critical in any access control installation, especially in high-use environments like university facilities, where system reliability directly impacts daily operations. Power Access Control works across many industries including education access control!

Specialized hardware upgrades were also implemented to improve gate performance. Existing rollers were replaced with 4-inch nylon cantilever wheels, significantly reducing friction and wear compared to older metal components. A new #50 industrial-grade drive chain was installed to ensure smooth and consistent power transfer from the operator to the gate. These upgrades contribute to a more efficient and lower-maintenance access control system—key for commercial properties throughout Atlanta.

One of the most innovative aspects of this project was the implementation of a no-cut vehicle detection solution. Instead of traditional wired loop systems that require cutting into pavement, three AES yellow disc e-Loops were installed. These wireless, surface-mounted magnetic sensors detect vehicle presence without trenching or damaging the existing asphalt. This approach is ideal for preserving infrastructure while still delivering reliable performance in modern Atlanta access control systems.

To meet current safety standards and ensure full compliance, the system was upgraded with monitored safety devices in accordance with UL 325 and ASTM F2200 regulations. A monitored retro-reflective photo eye was installed to detect obstructions in the gate’s path, along with a 5-foot monitored safety edge that immediately reverses the gate upon contact. These features are critical for protecting both people and property in any commercial access control installation and our team specializes in this!

Structural gate correction and reinforcement performed to restore full functionality and long-term reliability. This project included precision realignment, structural re-welding, and reinforcement of the existing gate system to eliminate sagging and improve performance. This type of access control gate repair in Roswell, GA reflects the importance of maintaining properly aligned entry systems across commercial properties in the greater Atlanta access control market.

This project focused on correcting years of structural fatigue that had caused the gate to sag and place unnecessary strain on the system. The gate was fully decommissioned and placed into a fabrication jig, where it was professionally realigned using controlled force by the experts at Power Access Control. This precision process allowed us to restore the gate to a perfectly square and level position—critical for proper operation in any commercial access control system.

To address underlying structural issues, we ground down all failing picket-to-rail joints and performed high-penetration re-welding across the entire frame. This step reinforced the integrity of the gate and eliminated weak points that had developed over time. For properties utilizing automated entry systems, this level of reinforcement is essential to ensure long-term reliability and prevent recurring failures on this gate agaiin.

To further enhance durability, we fabricated and integrated diagonal cross-bracing into the gate structure. This truss-style reinforcement redistributes the load back toward the hinge posts, preventing future sagging and improving overall stability. Structural upgrades like this are a key component of professional gate and access control system repairs throughout Atlanta and surrounding areas like Roswell, GA.

As part of the finishing process, all weld points were ground smooth, treated with a rust inhibitor, and carefully color-matched to the existing gate finish. This ensured not only structural performance but also a clean, professional appearance consistent with the original installation.

This project focused on transforming an outdated and failing access control infrastructure into a clean, professional-grade commercial access control system. As with many Atlanta access control projects, addressing infrastructure at the core level ensures a more dependable system moving forward.

Infrastructure optimization played a key role in this upgrade. A complete cleanup of the wiring pathways resolved intermittent faults, communication drops, and disorganized routing. The result is a streamlined, professional installation that not only performs better but is significantly easier to maintain—an important factor for long-term access control system reliability in commercial environments.

Rather than replacing all components, our team implemented a strategic hardware re-use approach. Existing readers and controllers were inspected, tested, and re-integrated where possible, reducing unnecessary costs while maintaining peak system performance. This type of access control upgrade is a cost-effective solution for many businesses across Atlanta looking to modernize without overspending.

The system was also reconfigured to support multi-credential authentication, allowing for greater flexibility and enhanced security. Whether utilizing key card access systems, encrypted fobs, or transitioning to mobile credentials, modern Atlanta access control systems are designed to scale with evolving security needs.

Access Control Infrastructure Upgrade in Loganville, GA | Atlanta Access Control Experts

Comprehensive overhaul of the access control infrastructure, featuring a complete rewiring and new conduit installation for a cleaner, more reliable setup. By integrating and re-commissioning the existing hardware, we successfully upgraded the system to support multiple credentials while maximizing the value of your current equipment. This access control installation in Loganville, GA reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality Atlanta access control systems for commercial properties.

This project focused on transforming an outdated and inconsistent system into a streamlined, professional-grade commercial access control system. The full rewiring process eliminated previous vulnerabilities caused by aging or poorly routed wiring, while the installation of new conduit provided both protection and organization—ensuring long-term durability and easier maintenance moving forward. Projects like this highlight the importance of professional access control installation in the Atlanta area.

Rather than replacing all components, our team strategically evaluated the existing hardware and identified opportunities to reuse and enhance key elements. By re-commissioning compatible equipment, we delivered a cost-effective access control upgrade that improved system performance without unnecessary replacement costs—an approach many businesses across Atlanta and Loganville, GA benefit from.

The newly upgraded system now supports multiple credential types, offering greater flexibility for users and administrators. Whether utilizing key card access systems, fobs, or other secure entry methods, the system is designed to scale with your operational needs while maintaining a high level of security. Modern Atlanta access control systems are built for both convenience and control, and this project reflects that standard.
